Description

Authentic German Frikadellen are flavorful, juicy pan-fried meat patties made from a blend of ground beef and pork, mixed with breadcrumbs, sautéed onions, and fresh herbs. This classic German comfort food is perfect for a hearty meal served with potatoes or a crisp salad.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef and pork mix
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp paprika (optional)

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: In a small pan, heat a little vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef and pork mix, breadcrumbs, egg, sautéed onions, Dijon mustard, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, and paprika if using. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
  3. Shape Patties: Divide the meat mixture into equal portions and form into round, flat patties about 3/4 inch thick to ensure even cooking.
  4. Fry Patties: Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Place the patties in the pan, making sure not to overcrowd them. Fry each patty for 5-7 minutes on each side, until they develop a golden brown crust and are cooked through.
  5. Drain and Serve: Remove the frikadellen from the pan and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve warm with your choice of side dishes such as boiled potatoes, mustard, or a fresh salad.

Notes

  • For a moister texture, you can soak the breadcrumbs in a little milk before adding to the meat mixture.
  • These patties can be made ahead and refrigerated or frozen for later use.
  • The paprika is optional but adds a subtle smoky flavor to the frikadellen.
  • Serve with German mustard or lingonberry jam for an authentic experience.
