Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 extra-large red onion, peeled and diced (2 cups)
- 7–8 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano or Italian Seasoning
- 2 – 28 ounce cans tomato sauce
- 1 – 28 ounce can crushed tomato
- ½ cup chopped fresh basil
- 1–2 tablespoon sugar (if needed)
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
- Step 1: Set a heavy-bottomed 6-quart sauce pot over medium heat. Add butter and onions. Stir and soften the onions for 5-8 minutes. If they start to brown, turn the heat to medium-low.
- Step 2: Stir in the garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes. Then add the ground sausage, ground beef, and dried oregano. Cook and break the meat into small pieces. Once the meat is well browned, stir in the tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes.
- Step 3: Cover and simmer for 30-60 minutes, stirring occasionally. It’s ready after 30 minutes, but can simmer longer if desired.
- Step 4: Stir in the fresh chopped basil. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and sugar if needed to balance acidity.
- Step 5: Serve warm with pasta.
