  • Author: anna
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This Cuban Casserole is a rich, comforting dish combining tender pulled pork, savory ham, and creamy Swiss cheese in a tangy mustard sauce with dill pickles for a unique Cuban-inspired flavor. Baked until bubbly and golden, this hearty casserole serves as a perfect meal for family gatherings or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 4 cups prepared pulled pork (not with sauce or carnitas)
  • 8 ounces sliced ham (cut into small pieces)

Dairy

  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (shredded yourself for better melting)
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 4 ounces cream cheese (softened)

Other Ingredients

  • ¼ cup yellow mustard
  • 1 cup sliced dill pickles
  • Additional pickles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare it for baking the casserole later.
  2. Make the sauce: In a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat, combine the whipping cream, softened cream cheese, and yellow mustard. Stir frequently until the mixture forms a smooth sauce and the cream cheese has fully melted.
  3. Add the meats and pickles: Mix the pulled pork, diced ham, half of the sliced dill pickles, and half of the shredded Swiss cheese into the sauce. Stir well to fully incorporate all ingredients.
  4. Layer toppings: Evenly distribute the remaining Swiss cheese and sliced pickles over the top of the mixture in the skillet for a cheesy and pickle garnish layer.
  5. Bake the casserole: Place the skillet in the oven and bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly and the cheese on top has melted and started to brown slightly.
  6. Garnish and serve: Remove the dish from the oven and add additional pickles on top if desired for extra crunch and flavor. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Shredding your own Swiss cheese enhances the melting quality and texture of the casserole.
  • Using an oven-safe cast iron skillet works best for even heating and easy transfer to the oven.
  • This casserole is quite rich and creamy, perfect for hearty appetites or as a sharing dish.
  • If you prefer less tang, reduce the amount of mustard slightly or use a milder variety.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture retention.
