- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella)
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
Garnishing:
- Fresh thyme sprigs
- Extra Parmesan cheese
- Crispy fried onions (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions – Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet. Add onions, salt, pepper, sugar, garlic powder, and thyme. Cook until golden brown. Add broth and cook until soft.
- Prepare the Potatoes – Preheat oven. Grease baking dish. Slice potatoes and toss with cream, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Assemble the Bake – Layer potatoes, onions, cheeses. Repeat layers. Pour remaining cream over the top.
- Bake the Dish – Cover and bake, then remove foil and bake until golden. Broil for a crispy top.
