Description

Strawberry Shortcake Kabobs are a delightful and fun twist on the classic strawberry shortcake dessert. Combining fresh, juicy strawberries with fluffy shortcake or pound cake and creamy whipped cream on skewers, these kabobs are perfect for summer picnics, barbecues, and casual family gatherings. Easy to assemble and customizable with optional chocolate sauce or mint garnish, they offer a playful and tasty way to enjoy the flavors of summer.

Ingredients

Scale

Fresh Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries
  • Whipped cream (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 lb shortcake or pound cake
  • Wooden or metal skewers

Optional Ingredients

  • Chocolate sauce for drizzling
  • Mint leaves for garnish

Homemade Shortcake (optional)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shortcake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract and stir until just combined. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch round pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool before cutting into cubes for the kabobs.
  2. Prepare the Strawberries: Wash the strawberries under cold water and gently pat them dry. Remove the green tops and slice each strawberry in half. Slicing makes them easier to skewer and visually appealing.
  3. Assemble the Kabobs: Take a skewer and thread a piece of cake first. Follow this with a half strawberry, then another piece of cake, and finish with another half strawberry. Continue alternating pieces until the skewer is nicely filled but leaves some space at one end for easy handling.
  4. Add Whipped Cream: Serve the kabobs with whipped cream on the side for dipping or use a piping bag to drizzle whipped cream over the assembled kabobs for an elegant presentation.
  5. Optional Garnishes: For added flavor, drizzle chocolate sauce over the kabobs or garnish with fresh mint leaves. You can also add other berries like blueberries or raspberries alongside the strawberries for extra color and taste.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor.
  • If using store-bought cake, choose a high-quality shortcake or pound cake for the best texture.
  • The kabobs are best served fresh but can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Freezing is not recommended as it will affect the texture of the strawberries and whipped cream.
  • Feel free to experiment with additional toppings such as other fresh berries or a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
