Ingredients
Scale
Pasta
- 12 oz (340g) egg noodles
- 1 tablespoon butter
Sauce
- 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup sour cream
- 3/4 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for authentic Swedish flavor)
Main
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
- 1 (24 oz) bag frozen Swedish-style meatballs (about 25–30 meatballs)
Garnish
- Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions until just al dente. Drain, then return the noodles to the pot and toss them with butter to prevent sticking. Set aside.
- Mix the sauce: In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, and nutmeg if using. This creates a creamy and flavorful sauce base.
- Assemble the casserole: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Add the cooked noodles to the dish and pour the prepared sauce over them. Mix gently to ensure the noodles are evenly coated. Then, fold in the frozen Swedish-style meatballs, distributing them evenly throughout the casserole.
- Top with cheese: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese evenly over the top of the noodle and meatball mixture, creating a cheesy crust upon baking.
- Bake: Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and place it in the oven. Bake for 25 minutes to heat through and meld flavors. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired, then serve hot and enjoy this hearty Scandinavian-inspired comfort meal.
Notes
- For authentic flavor, do not skip the optional nutmeg in the sauce mix.
- If you prefer, substitute Swiss cheese for mozzarella for a nuttier taste.
- The frozen Swedish meatballs do not need to be thawed before baking.
- Use a 9×13-inch baking dish for best coverage and even cooking.
- Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat beautifully.
