Description

Crispy Bang Bang Tofu is a flavorful and crunchy vegan dish featuring extra-firm tofu coated in a crispy panko and cornstarch crust, baked to perfection and tossed in a creamy, spicy bang bang sauce. This recipe is perfect for those looking to enjoy a plant-based, texture-rich dish with a kick of heat, ideal for serving as an appetizer or a main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu and Coating

  • 1 block Extra-firm Tofu
  • 1/4 cup Cornstarch
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder

Bang Bang Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Vegan Mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon White Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Optional Garnishes

  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Chopped Chives or Scallions

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Wrap the extra-firm tofu block in a kitchen towel and place a weight on top to remove excess moisture. Let it press for about 5 minutes to ensure the tofu gets crispy when cooked.
  2. Cut tofu into cubes: After pressing, cut the tofu into approximately 1-inch cubes for even cooking and easy coating.
  3. Prepare baking sheet and oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate cleaning.
  4. Make the coating mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, panko breadcrumbs, and garlic powder to create a crispy, flavorful crust for the tofu.
  5. Coat the tofu cubes: Toss the tofu cubes in the breadcrumb mixture until each piece is evenly coated, ensuring a crunchy texture after baking.
  6. Bake the tofu: Spread the coated tofu cubes evenly on the lined baking sheet. Bake them for approximately 40 minutes, flipping halfway through to allow all sides to crisp up golden brown.
  7. Prepare the bang bang sauce: While tofu bakes, mix vegan mayonnaise, sriracha, white sugar, and salt in a separate bowl to create the creamy, spicy sauce.
  8. Toss tofu in sauce: Once the tofu is baked and crispy, immediately toss the cubes in the bang bang sauce until they are evenly coated, infusing them with flavor and creaminess.
  9. Serve and garnish: Serve the bang bang tofu immediately, garnished with red pepper flakes and chopped chives or scallions for added heat and fresh flavor.

Notes

  • Use only extra-firm tofu for best crispy results.
  • Arrowroot starch can substitute cornstarch if preferred.
  • Regular breadcrumbs are not recommended as they won’t yield the same crunch as panko.
  • For a milder sauce, substitute sriracha with sweet chili sauce.
  • You may omit or substitute white sugar with your preferred sweetener.
  • This dish is best served immediately to maintain the tofu’s crispiness.
  • Pressing tofu is essential to remove moisture and achieve a crunchy texture.
