Description

This homemade applesauce recipe is a simple, delicious, and naturally sweetened treat made from fresh apples, cinnamon, and a touch of maple syrup. Perfect as a snack or a side, it’s easy to prepare on the stovetop and can be enjoyed warm or chilled.

Ingredients

Scale

Applesauce Ingredients

  • 8 apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
  • ⅓ cup water
  • ¼ cup maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash the apples thoroughly. Using a paring knife, vegetable peeler, or apple peel corer slicer tool, peel the apples, core them, and then chop into small pieces to ensure they soften faster during cooking.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Place the chopped apples into a large pot. Add ⅓ cup of water, ¼ cup of maple syrup if using, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Mix gently to combine.
  3. Cook the Applesauce: Heat the pot over medium heat until the mixture reaches a low simmer. Cover with a lid and allow the apples to cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples become very soft.
  4. Add Lemon Juice: Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. This adds freshness and balances the sweetness.
  5. Blend to Smooth: Use an immersion blender directly in the pot to puree the apples into a smooth applesauce. Alternatively, transfer the mixture to a food processor to blend until smooth.
  6. Serve or Store: The applesauce can be enjoyed warm immediately or cooled in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to serve cold.

Notes

  • You can omit the maple syrup for a naturally sweetened applesauce.
  • Adjust cinnamon to taste or add other spices like nutmeg or cloves for variation.
  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
