Description
A deliciously smoky and sweet twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring creamy smoked Gouda and crisp apple slices, perfectly toasted to golden brown perfection and drizzled with honey for a delightful finish.
Ingredients
Scale
Bread & Butter
- 2 slices Whole Grain or Sourdough Bread
- 1 tablespoon Butter
Filling
- 4 ounces Smoked Gouda Cheese, grated or sliced
- 1 Apple (preferably Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon Honey (optional)
Instructions
- Prep Ingredients: Thinly slice the apple into even pieces to ensure they heat evenly. Grate or slice the smoked Gouda cheese to prepare for layering inside the sandwich.
- Assemble Sandwich: Butter one side of each bread slice generously. On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer the smoked Gouda evenly followed by the sliced apples. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side out.
- Cook: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and toast for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted completely.
- Serve: Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it rest for 1 minute to allow the cheese to set slightly. Drizzle honey over the top for a touch of sweetness, then slice the sandwich and serve warm.
Notes
- Use a sturdy bread like sourdough or whole grain to prevent sogginess.
- Adjust honey quantity or omit for less sweetness or a vegan option with agave syrup.
- Cooking over medium-low heat ensures the cheese melts without burning the bread.
- Try tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for a nice contrast to the smoky cheese.
